Earlier this year, our team completed a deeply impactful medical mission in Ghana, with support from the West Akim Health Directorate to deliver essential healthcare services to the underserved community of Asamankase. This collaboration strengthened local healthcare efforts while allowing us to reach hundreds of patients in just a few days.

A Strong Partnership for Community Health

Local leadership and healthcare professionals played a critical role in ensuring that services were effectively delivered and aligned with the community’s most pressing needs.

By the Numbers: A High-Impact Mission

Over the course of three days, the medical team provided care to a total of 1,183 patients:

  • Day 1: 312 patients

  • Day 2: 342 patients

  • Day 3: 529 patients

This remarkable reach was made possible by a dedicated and multidisciplinary team, including:

  • 7 medical practitioners (3 Physician Assistants and 4 Medical Doctors)

  • 3 optometrists supported by 3 assistants

  • 4 pharmacy personnel

  • 6 laboratory scientists

  • 5 nurses

  • 10 protocol and support staff

Each team member played a vital role in delivering efficient, compassionate, and comprehensive care.

Addressing Critical Health Needs

The mission revealed a wide range of medical concerns affecting the community.  We provided testing for Hepatitis B, C, HIV and also rapid malaria testing.  The team also encountered sensitive cases of sexual assault, highlighting the urgent need for both medical and psychosocial interventions.

A particularly important takeaway was the significant and often unmet need for mental health services. Many patients presented with concerns that extended beyond physical health, underscoring the importance of integrating mental health support into future missions and local healthcare planning.

Comprehensive Care Delivery

Services provided during the mission included general medical consultations, laboratory testing, vision care, and pharmaceutical support. The inclusion of optometry services allowed many patients to receive eye exams and corrective solutions—services that are often difficult to access in rural settings.

Laboratory teams enabled on-site diagnostics, improving the accuracy and timeliness of treatment, while pharmacy personnel ensured that patients left with the medications and guidance needed for recovery and ongoing care.

Looking Forward

This mission was not only about immediate care—it was about building a foundation for continued impact. The collaboration with the West Akim Health Directorate ensures that patients can be connected to follow-up care and that local systems are strengthened for the future.

The insights gained, particularly regarding mental health and vulnerable populations, will shape how future missions are planned and executed. There is a clear opportunity to expand services, deepen partnerships, and continue addressing healthcare gaps in meaningful ways.

A Shared Commitment

We are grateful to every volunteer, partner, and community member who contributed to the success of this mission. Together, we made a measurable difference—and reaffirmed the power of collaboration in advancing global health.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to serving with compassion, respect, and purpose—bringing care to those who need it most.

Restoring Vision and Raising Awareness

One of the most impactful components of the mission was providing ophthalmology services utilizing local optometrists. Together, the team screened hundreds of patients and distributed nearly 900 reading glasses to both children and adults—many of whom had never previously had access to basic eye care.

For many recipients, something as simple as a pair of reading glasses meant the ability to return to work, succeed in school, or carry out daily tasks with greater independence. Children who struggled to see clearly in the classroom were given a renewed opportunity to learn, while adults expressed relief at being able to read, sew, farm, or manage their trade more effectively.

Beyond immediate care,  patients needed the screenings due to a number of untreated or undiagnosed eye conditions. In many cases, these conditions stem from preventable or manageable health issues that have gone unaddressed due to limited access to care.

Common underlying conditions contributing to eye disorders included:

  • Uncorrected refractive errors (such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and presbyopia)

  • Chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes affecting vision

  • Untreated infections and inflammation of the eye

  • Prolonged exposure to UV light without protection

  • Poor nutrition, including vitamin deficiencies

  • Lack of early screening in children, leading to delayed diagnosis

  • Eye strain and damage from prolonged untreated vision problems

This experience underscored the critical need for ongoing vision care services and public health education. By partnering with local optometrists, the mission not only addressed immediate needs but also helped strengthen local capacity for continued eye care support.

Providing access to something as simple as reading glasses proved to be life-changing—and a powerful reminder that small interventions can have a lasting impact on quality of life
